Ponderings of the Book-to-Movie kind.

Angelina Jolie is going to play Dr. Kay Scarpetta!

I like Angelina - I actually think she's a better actor than a lot of her movies would suggest - but she's not exactly who I imagined when reading the Patricia Cornwall novels. Yes, Scarpetta is sophisticated, intelligent and attractive and Jolie could easily carry all those attributes off but I always saw Scarpetta as being more like Cornwall herself.

I've heard some other names suggested and the one that interests me most and I think would suit the role is Jodie Foster. She obviously has the acting chops and as a big fan of Silence of the Lambs it would be interesting to see how she carries the role.

Will be interesting to see the finished product either way.

Just scrolling through and had to comment. Jollie is NOT Kay Scarpetta... Lucy, maybe in a stretch, but I don't know that I'd go that far. I hope this is not set in ink yet - I will be extremely disappointed. Like you, I think Jodie Foster would be good.

I always saw Scarpetta as being more like Cornwall herself.

Yes, Exactly that! I sincerely hope they don't misstep in casting Marino either! I always saw Dennis Franz in that role - of course, they've let so much time go by I'm not sure he's right anymore.

Huh. Well, she's good, so she can probably act the part, but she certainly doesn't look the part that's always been in my head. It will be interesting.

I couldn't see her as Lucy at all to be honest. My first reaction was kind of happy surprise to see Jolie is actually not giving up acting but that was quickly followed by a WTF! of her being Scarpetta. If not Jodie Foster I would have gone with Glenn Close or Meryll Streep or even Helen Mirren (all fantastic actresses but probably considered "too old" for the box office.)

Apparently Cornwall herself has approved Jolie so I'd say there's no turning back, though the movie is meant to be based on the books rather than taking one particular story so who knows what they'll change.

My reaction exactly. I'll just add it to the list things I'm cautiously looking forward to.

Oh! I really don't like this. I love the Scarpetta novels and Jolie is just not right for the role, she can act it, but I can't picture her at all.

Exactly! I can only think they're trying to sex up the movie and while I think Scarpetta is quite a catch, she may not be what the boyfriends will want to see. Right now I'm imaging a female Bourne Identity!!!

Well exactly! I'm dreading to think what they will do with Benton, Marino or even Lucy.
